In our hyper-connected, visually driven world of instant access, a curious art enthusiast does not need to look too hard for art. Simple internet research will get you front-and-center with (literally) thousands of images of art from artists, galleries and festivals from around the world. However, to truly experience a work of art; to connect intimately and, perhaps, gain an insight into the artist’s mind, one must see it first-hand. Whether it be the visceral experience of a stunning oil on canvas; an attempt at unravelling the myriad layers of a conceptual installation; getting lost in a sound and video project; or gazing open-mouthed at a towering monumental sculpture, art is best seen in real life.
With that resounding overture, here are 5 of the absolute best art exhibitions taking place over the next 12 months.

Each documenta takes its character from the ideas and concept of its Artistic Director, and is therefore not only a forum for current trends in contemporary art, but a place where innovative and standards-setting exhibition concepts are trialed. In each edition, documenta has played a leading role in taking the international discourse about art in new directions. Over the past decades, documenta has established itself as an institution that goes far beyond a survey of what is currently happening, inviting the attention of the international art world every five years for this “museum of 100 days.” The discourse and the dynamics of the discussion surrounding each documenta reflects and challenges the expectations of society about art. documenta und Museum Fridericianum gGmbH is a non-profit organization supported and funded by the City of Kassel and the State of Hesse, as well as by the German Federal Cultural Foundation.
