In 1989, Lexus debuted its LS saloon and that car gave the German luxury car-makers a bit of a nightmare. It established Lexus as a force to be reckoned with in the luxury car game. I have had the good fortune to spend a lot of time with the earlier LS and it remains one of the most alluring motor cars since it comes with a superb blend of luxury and style. It is unlike anything else.
Hence, I was more than keen to check out the 2021 model which debuts a raft of changes. First of which is the stunning exterior along with its unique silver hue. Silver is quite common as a colour but not so on the car here as it is called “Gin-ei Luster” and it is stunning in the flesh with aluminum flakes in the paint along with the mirror-like texture. The bumper and the headlamps are further sharpened up along with black inserts.
The LS is huge and long with the styling is swoopy and coupe like. The inside gets a new multimedia system with a 12.3-inch display. Further on, the controls on the steering wheel and center console have been colored black for improved visibility and a clean impression. Also, a switch for displaying on the touch display the controls for the often-used seat heaters and steering wheel heater has been added to the center console for improved operability.
The seats are plusher with deeper stitch points, and underlying seat pads feature low-resilience urethane. You sink into them while the rear seat is the place to be with huge amounts of space along with extending the rear seat to have a full recline (up-to 48 degrees with extendable foot-rests) first-class airline seat experience.
There is a lot of technology including a digital rearview mirror, driving assist tech, advanced park plus the BladeScan AHS (Adaptive High-beam System) in which the LED-sourced light shines onto a blade mirror spinning at high speed and is transferred to a lens to illuminate the road ahead.
Obviously there is a lot more in terms of luxury and features including massage seats, active noise cancellation etc.
I remember the hybrid power train being silent yet surprisingly sporty when dialed up with the dynamic modes. It is a limousine with a unique character plus the style, features and luxury makes this a luxury car which stands out- even with tough competition around. Prices start at Rs 1.9cr.
