For the last few months, racism has occupied media centre stage, the immediate trigger being the unfortunate death of the American George Floyd, after being restrained by the Minneapolis police. In the US, the outrage was severe and protests mushroomed all over the country as the video of the police officer with his knee on Floyd’s neck went viral. These protests were echoed in several countries including India. Black Lives Matter, the movement that began about six years ago, following the fatal shooting of another African American by a white American man, began trending pervasively.
